Windows cannot move object because access is denied active directory

This appears to be a new feature with Windows Server 2008.

When you create an OU in the Active Directory, there is a small check box which says:

"Protect container from accidental deletion"

This checkbox is checked by default. When you add an OU the OU gets added with this security.

Now when you try to Move the OU, it will give you the error "Windows cannot move object because access is denied active directory"

If you want to get past this:

  • Right click on an OU -> View -> Select Advanced Features

  • Right click on the OU (the one you want to delete) -> Properties -> Object -> Uncheck the checkbox "Protect object from accidental deletion".

Now you can try moving/delete the OU and it should happen.
